The auto refractometer is used to get an objective, computer-generated estimate of your eyeglass or contact lens prescription. You’ll rest your chin and forehead on the machine and focus on a simple image, such as a hot air balloon or house, while the device measures how light changes as it enters your eye. This provides a fast, accurate starting point that helps our doctors fine-tune your final prescription during a manual refraction. The test is quick, painless, and requires no eye drops, typically taking less than a minute per eye. Auto refraction is especially useful for patients with limited ability to communicate their prescription needs, such as young children or the elderly.
