Dry Eye Treatment

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye happens when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or the tears they produce evaporate too quickly to keep the surface comfortable. It sounds minor, but anyone who lives with it knows how disruptive it can be, that constant gritty, burning, tired feeling that makes screens, reading and even a windy day uncomfortable. At IrisCare Eye Clinic in Lagos, dry eye treatment starts with finding out why your eyes are dry, because the right treatment depends entirely on the cause.

Common Symptoms

  • A gritty or sandy feeling, as though something is in your eye
  • Burning or stinging
  • Redness
  • Tired, heavy eyes, especially after screens
  • Blurred vision that clears when you blink
  • Watery eyes, surprisingly, excessive tearing is often a dry eye sign.

What Causes Dry Eye?

Several everyday factors contribute, often together: long hours on screens (which reduce how often you blink), air conditioning and fans, dusty or harsh environments,  ageing, certain medications, and some underlying health conditions. Lagos life, screens, traffic dust and constant air conditioning, combines several of these, which is why dry eye is so common here.

the surface of your eyes and your tear film using a slit lamp microscope, and assess how well your eyes are producing and retaining tears. This tells us whether your dry eye is mainly down to tear quantity, tear quality, or environmental and lifestyle factors and that shapes your treatment plan.

Treatment Options

  • Lubricating eye drops: Artificial tears to relieve symptoms, matched to your needs.
  • Lifestyle adjustments: Practical changes to screen habits, blinking, hydration and environment.
  • Warm compresses and lid care: Where the glands along the lid margin are involved.
  • Environmental advice: Managing air conditioning, fans and dust exposure.
  • Referral: For more complex or persistent cases, we will refer you to a specialist.

Living with Dry Eye

Simple habits make a real difference: follow the 20-20-20 rule on screens (every 20 minutes, look about 20 feet away for 20 seconds), blink fully and often, stay hydrated, and position fans and air conditioning so they do not blow directly at your face. We will tailor this advice to your day-to-day life.
