Emergency Eye Care

If You’re Experiencing an Eye Emergency Right Now

Some eye problems cannot wait. If you have sudden vision loss, a serious eye injury, a chemical splash, or severe eye pain, go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately. Do not wait for an appointment, and do not delay. Acting fast can save your sight.

This page explains which symptoms are emergencies, basic first aid while you get help, and how IrisCare can support you for non-urgent same-day concerns.

Seek Emergency Care Immediately If You Have:

  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • A chemical splash in the eye
  • A penetrating eye injury or an object stuck in the eye
  • Severe eye pain
  • Sudden flashes of light, a shower of floaters, or a curtain over your vision
  • Severe pain with nausea, headache and halos around lights (possible acute glaucoma)

These need a hospital, not a clinic appointment

Basic First Aid While You Get Help

Chemical splash

Rinse the eye continuously with clean water for at least 15 to 20 minutes on your way to hospital. Do not rub

Object in the eye

Do not rub or try to remove anything embedded. Cover the eye loosely and seek care

Blunt injury
(knock to the eye)

Apply a cold compress gently, avoid pressure, and seek assessment.

Do not!

apply pressure, remove embedded objects, or put any non-prescribed drops in an injured eye.

This guidance is general first aid, not a substitute for professional emergency treatment. When in doubt, get to a hospital.
