What Is Vision Testing?

Vision testing is the part of your eye care that answers a simple, practical question: how clearly do you see, and what correction, if any, do you need to see your best? At IrisCare Eye Clinic in Dopemu, Lagos, vision testing produces your eye glass prescription: the precise set of measurements your optician uses to make glasses or contact lenses tailored exactly to your eyes. It is worth knowing that vision testing is one part of a full assessment. A standalone vision test
focuses on measuring and correcting your sight, while a comprehensive eye examination also checks the health of your eyes. If it has been a while since your last full check, we will usually recommend the comprehensive option.

The Components of a Vision Test

Your vision test is carried out by a registered optometrist and is completely painless. It typically
includes:

Distance vision

Reading a standard letter chart to measure how clearly you see far away.

Near vision

Checking how comfortably you read and see close-up detail.

Intermediate vision

Important for screen and computer distances.

Binocular vision testing

How well your two eyes work together.

Accommodation testing

How well your eyes focus between near and far.

Refraction

The core measurement, using both computerised and manual methods, that produces your final prescription.

Understanding Your Eye Prescription

A prescription can look like a string of confusing numbers. Here is what each part actually means, using a sample:

OD / OS: Your right eye (OD) and left eye (OS).
SPH (Sphere): Corrects short-sightedness (minus values) or long-sightedness (plus values).
CYL (Cylinder): Corrects astigmatism, where the eye’s surface is shaped slightly unevenly.
AXIS: The orientation of that astigmatism correction, measured from 0 to 180 degrees.
ADD: An extra reading boost, used in bifocal and varifocal lenses.
PD (Pupillary Distance): The distance between the centres of your pupils, so your lenses sit correctly.
Understanding your own prescription puts you in control, you will know what you are buying and why.

Types of Prescriptions We Issue

• Bifocal: Two zones in one lens, for distance and reading.
• Varifocal / Progressive: A smooth transition across distance, intermediate and near, with no visible line.

• Computer glasses: Optimised for screen distance.
• Sports and specialist vision: Built for specific activities.
• Contact lens prescriptions: Measured differently from glasses, because lenses sit directly on the eye.

From Prescription to Glasses

Once your prescription is ready, the rest is straightforward. You choose a frame from our collection of over 900, your optometrist recommends the right lens type and any useful coatings antireflective, blue-light filtering or photochromic and we glaze your lenses. For most standard prescriptions, this happens the same day through our on-the-spot glazing service. We then fit and adjust your glasses so they sit comfortably and correctly.
