Children’s Eye Care

Why Children’s Eye Care Matters

A great deal of what a child learns comes through their eyes, yet children rarely complain about poor vision, because they assume the way they see is how everyone sees. An undetected vision problem can quietly hold back reading, schoolwork, confidence and even behaviour. That is why
children’s eye care at our Lagos clinic is about catching problems early, while a child’s vision is still developing and most treatable. We make every visit calm, friendly and unhurried, so children feel at ease.

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

  • Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close
  • Squinting, or tilting the head to see
  • Frequent eye rubbing
  • Complaints of headaches or tired eyes
  • Difficulty reading, or losing their place often
  • Avoiding close work or screens
  • One eye that turns in or out

When Should a Child Have Their First Eye Exam?

We recommend a first check before a child starts school, and regular checks at each new school stage after that. A child does not need to know their letters to be tested, we have ways to assess vision in children of all ages, including those too young to read.

How We Examine Children

Our optometrists use child-friendly, often picture-based methods, and objective tests that do not rely on the child describing what they see. The atmosphere is gentle and patient. We explain everything to both child and parent, and we never rush a nervous child.

Common Children’s Eye Conditions

  • Refractive errors: Short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism, all correctable with glasses.
  • Amblyopia (lazy eye): Most treatable when caught early in childhood.
  • Squint (strabismus): A misalignment of the eyes that needs assessment.
  • Learning-related vision issues: Focusing and eye-teaming difficulties that affect reading.

Kids’ Frames

If your child needs glasses, we have a selection of durable, comfortable children’s frames designed to survive real childhood, and to be chosen happily by the child wearing them.
