A tonometer measures the pressure inside your eye (intraocular pressure), one of the key indicators used to detect and monitor glaucoma. Elevated eye pressure can damage the optic nerve over time, often without any noticeable symptoms until vision loss has already begun making this test essential for early detection. The most common method involves a gentle puff of air or a light touch of a small probe to the surface of the eye, sometimes after a numbing eye drop is applied. The test takes only a few seconds per eye and is quick and comfortable. Regular tonometry readings allow our doctors to track changes in eye pressure over time and adjust treatment plans accordingly, especially for patients already diagnosed with or at risk of glaucoma.
